Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Patriot Curbing?

We are glad you asked that question. Patriot Curbing is an American company family owned and operated by Phil and Stacy. We are your typical mom and pop operation. Stacy handles a lot of the sales, while Phil and his helper, Parker, do most of the installs. Phil started this business back in January of 2010. It has always been a dream of Phil’s to own and operate a small business.

Phil has over 20 years in the construction industry, and currently holds a position as a Multi-Family Superintendent over seeing multi-million dollar apartment projects being built. This construction background has given him a vast insight and knowledge of concrete, customer service, quality control, time management and all things associated with running a small business.

Stacy, a native Floridian, is the mother of two boys. Rush, 20, is a junior at UNF in Jacksonville, and Christian, 17, attends Mt. Dora High School. After 20 years of a career in court reporting, last November she decided to take on a new challenge as an inside sales rep for Data Graphics in Mt. Dora. In her spare time, Stacy enjoys spending time with her family.

Phil and Stacy work closely together, from the initial customer contact to the install, to ensure that their customers are taken care of. They both share a passion to run Patriot Curbing as a successful and reputable business.

What is landscape curbing?

Landscape curbing is a continuous concrete border that is mixed onsite and extruded onsite. The curbing can be colored or left concrete gray. It can be stamped and/or textured… or simply left plain. Your curb can be as simple or elaborate as you want to make it. There are 2 primary style curbs, the slant and the traditional. The slant curb is what we use for stamp and texture designs. The Traditional (or mowers edge) can be colored, but not stamped or textured. Both styles are used in bordering landscape beds, tree rings and other functions as well.

What is Sunshine State One Call or 811?

This is the locate service that will mark your utilities. It’s very important, and the law, that you contact them so they can mark your Power, Phone, Cable, Gas and any other utilities that Patriot Curbing may encounter during the install process

We ask that you call the week before your install is scheduled. WHY? The law states that you must give 811 at least a 72 hour notice before digging. With the rise in local construction, just like anyone else, they get backed up. Calling a week before your install shall give them plenty of time to locate your property.

Digging? What are you digging? We are not really digging, but the removal of the existing sod in the new bed lines entails using a machine that acts very much like a roto tiller. This machine has a blade that rotates at a very high rate of speed and only cuts down as deep as where the grass meets the dirt. During this process it is possible to come in contact with phone or cable lines that are not properly installed at a proper depth. Sometimes these lines are just below the sod line and we could hit them.

So as a precaution, we like to know where these lines are located so we do not hit them and cause you, the customer, any unnecessary inconveniences.

Will my curb crack?

YES!! All concrete will crack at some point. To help facilitate where this cracking occurs, we cut control joints in the curbing approximately 3 to 4 feet apart. We do not cut this control join very deep as we do not want to weaken the integrity of the curb. But we do want to give it a place to crack, and crack cleanly.

Now, just because we cut control joints does not mean this concrete will ALWAYS crack there. Occasionally it will crack across the face of the curb in a spot that is less desirable. For this all we can do is apologize. There is no sure way to keep this concrete from cracking where it wants to crack.

We do take some measures to help lessen the odds of this happening. We use a fiber additive. This additive adds strength to the concrete and drastically reduces cracking.

Do you offer a warranty? If so, what?

1. YES, we do offer a warranty. Our warranty is; Patriot Curbing warranties its materials against deterioration for a period of 1 year from the date of installation. This does not include definable damage, cracking, or color variations. Patriot Curbing is not responsible for cracking. Patriot Curbing is not responsible for damaged caused by lawn services or other damage caused by others.

2. There are 2 things we do not warranty

1) Cracking concrete

2) Color

Typically there are 2 common reasons for cracking or broken curb, 1) Lawn service runs amuck and 2) tree roots. If you start to experience several cracks showing up, even if it is past the 1 year warranty time period, PLEASE, give us a call we want to investigate. There may be a chance we did something wrong. We want your curbing to provide you with years of beauty and functionality.

What does landscape curbing cost?

We are so glad you asked this question. Typically I will tell people if they are trying budget for landscape curbing to figure around $5.50/linear foot. THIS IS ONLY A BUDGETING FIGURE NOT A QUOTE. Every job is different and unique. Color, design, footage, location (on the side of a mountain or volcano) sealer no sealer. Many different things go into figuring the best price for each job. Please, give us a call and we will gladly come visit you and provide you with our best price.

Yes, you will find someone cheaper if you look around. No, we will not price match. Price matching just means we are not giving you the best price possible. With that said, I do not want to lose a job over a $100 give or take. But if someone is selling you curb significantly less, ask the question why, how qualified are they and will they be around in a year or two if I have a problem.

How far will you travel?

That all depends. We want the opportunity to provide landscape curbing to everyone who desires it. A lot of it depends on the footage. We have traveled to Merritt Island to install curb. If the size of the job warrants the travel, we will travel.

Do you have a minimum?

YES. We have a $450 minimum which will usually equate to about 80 feet give or take depending on selection.

NOW, don’t let this deter you from calling if you have a small job. We may have another small job in your location that we can partner up with and make the travel time work with the total cost of both jobs, done individually. So please, don’t think you are too far away, we might be closer than you think.

Also, we have a small network of other curbers we trust and are willing to recommend to you to take care of your curbing needs.

Where are you located?

We are located in Sorrento, Fl. This is in Lake County, just outside of Mt. Dora Fl and about 11 miles from Sanford Fl.

Do you paint the curb?

NO!! We use an integrated color that goes in during the mixing process. This color is through-out the curb to provide a long lasting color effect. If you should get a nick chip or even a break in your curb, the integrated color will make it less noticeable.

Do I need to reseal my curb every year?

We recommend it. To prolong the life of your curb we recommend that you clean your curb every year and add another coat of sealer. Here’s what we recommend:

1) Clean your curb, use Simple Green. This product is bio degradable and shouldn’t hurt your plant life. You can also use a pressure washer but we recommend NOT using the wand at a direct angle, use more of a sweeping motion to remove mold and mildew.

2) Once the curb is clean AND dry we recommend using a product made by H&C and sold through Sherwin Williams. It’s important to use a Solvent Base Clear sealer. Solvent base is important because if you use a water base, it could turn your curb a milky color. It’s like painting something with and oil base paint then using a latex base paint over it. Same principle.< 3) Use a clean paint brush to apply the sealer. DO NOT USE A PLASTIC SPRAYER!!! You need a metal sprayer like we use. The solvent base will start to break down the plastic and gum things up… and then you have a big mess. 4) If you like the glossy look, then ask the folks at Sherwin Williams for the glossy sealer.

How long do I need to stay away from the curb while it dries?

We recommend a minimum of 72 hrs. If you have a lawn service, then tell them to keep their monster lawn mowers away from the curb at least a foot for the first 2 weeks. If they hit this curb, this could cause the curb to break prematurely or in a spot not scored with a control joint. As for a weed whipper they can use those OR an edger after the 72 hrs.

My curb is looking faded and dull. What can I do?

We get asked this a lot. Again, Sherwin Williams has a great line of concrete stains made by H&C. Some of these stains can be tinted to allow you to better meet your color needs. You will need about 1 gallon per 100 ft of curb. This can be applied with a paint brush. BUT BE CAREFUL… anything and everything you get this on it will stain it that color. You can even thin this product a little bit with some Zylene.

How long does it take to install the curb?

Usually in one day. On occasion we will encounter a rather large job (400 feet or more) and will break it up into 2 days. But in most cases, 1 day typically.

What about rain?

We will make the call on the day of the install. Depending on the weather patterns and when they are calling for rain, we may postpone. If it rains during the install, and occasionally we will get caught, we will cover the curb to protect it the best we can. IF, the curb becomes damaged during the rain, we will attempt to repair it. If it is not repairable, then we will remove the curb at OUR cost and reinstall it at OUR cost. Period. If it rains after we leave and the curb gets rain damage, we will replace the curb at OUR cost.

We have had to remove rain damaged curb before and reinstall it. We don’t like to, but we will. That’s our promise.

Now sprinklers are a different story. If your sprinklers come on and damage the curb, we are not responsible. We ask that you turn your sprinklers off for at least 24 hour prior and 24 hrs after.

What do we need to do the day of our install?

1) On the morning of the install please make sure the sprinkler system is shut off. We prefer that the system NOT run the night before either. Your sprinkler system can run the day following the install.

2) Please ensure that ALL landscaping is either moved or cut back. This will slow us down during the prep process. Likewise, please make sure all sprinklers that will fall in the curb line are moved as well.

3) If you have old edging that needs to be removed please have this removed prior to the morning of the install.

4) Please have any land mines (dog poo) cleared before we arrive.

5) Remind the installation crew of any special instructions.

6) Have someone present when the crew is finished that can walk the work and make payment upon satisfaction.
